Kashmere Gate is one of Delhi's most historically resonant localities β the northern gateway of the old walled city of Shahjahanabad, whose name carries the memory of the historic gateway through which the road to Kashmir began. Today it is a dense, energetic commercial area β particularly famous for its wholesale market for automobile parts, electronics, hardware and the kind of specialised trade that Delhi's wholesale districts do uniquely well.
The Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT Kashmere Gate) makes this locality one of Delhi's great transit hubs β buses to every state in north Bharat depart from here, and the resulting footfall creates a commercial ecosystem of restaurants, small hotels, shops and services. The Delhi Metro Yellow and Red Lines intersect at Kashmere Gate station, making it a key interchange in the metropolitan network.
The Kashmere Gate was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as part of the fortified walls of Shahjahanabad β the last great Mughal capital. The gate and the area around it carry deep historical memory, including events of 1857 that are part of Bharat's memory of resistance to pre-independence period rule.
Kashmere Gate Metro station β Yellow Line and Red Line interchange. ISBT for inter-state bus services across north Bharat. Old Delhi railway station approximately 2 km.
Kashmere Gate and ISBT see their most intense activity during the Kanwar Yatra (Shravan, July-August) when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel to and from Haridwar through this terminal. Chhath Puja (October-November) sees large numbers of devotees from Bihar and eastern UP travelling through ISBT. Diwali and Holi bring festival travel peaks. The pleasant winter months of October-February see the highest overall travel volumes through the bus terminal.
