Hisar is one of Haryana's largest and most significant cities, the headquarters of Hisar district and a major centre of the state's agricultural, industrial and educational activity. The city is known as the Steel City of Haryana for its significant steel rolling mills and allied industries, and also as an important centre for cattle breeding, with the National Research Centre on Equines and the Haryana Agricultural University located here. Hisar's agricultural research institutions have contributed significantly to Bharat's Green Revolution achievements in Haryana, developing high-yield wheat and other crop varieties. The city has a strong commercial character with active markets for agricultural produce and general trade.
Hisar was founded by Firuz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century CE as a hunting retreat and later developed into a significant administrative centre. The Firuz Shah Palace complex ruins and the Lat ki Masjid in Hisar are important monuments from the Tughlaq period. The city's modern identity as a centre of agricultural research reflects independent Bharat's investment in the Green Revolution technologies that transformed Haryana into the breadbasket of the nation.

The wheat harvest season (March-April) and Baisakhi are the most significant agricultural calendar events in Hisar's semi-arid agricultural zone. The Haryana Livestock Show held in Hisar is one of the most important agricultural fairs in north Bharat.
