Jind is the headquarters of Jind district in central Haryana, a city with a distinctive identity as one of Haryana's educational hubs and as the historical capital of the Jind princely state, one of the Phulkian dynasty's Sikh kingdoms that emerged in the 18th century. The city has a growing educational infrastructure with Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University and several colleges. The Ramrai temple, one of Haryana's important religious sites, is located near Jind. The city's commercial activity is driven by agricultural trade in wheat, paddy and cotton.
Jind was the capital of the Jind princely state, established by the Phulkian Sikh dynasty in the 18th century. The Phulkian rulers of Jind were among the Sikh chieftains who emerged in the power vacuum following the decline of Mughal authority in Punjab, and their state was one of the Cis-Sutlej Sikh kingdoms that maintained a degree of autonomy through the pre-independence period before integration into independent Bharat.
