Ludhiana is the largest city in Punjab and the industrial capital of the state, known as the Manchester of India for its extraordinary concentration of woollen hosiery, bicycle manufacturing and light engineering industries that have made it one of Bharat most important manufacturing cities. The city produces over 90 percent of India woollen hosiery output and is the world largest manufacturer of bicycle parts. Hero Cycles and Avon Cycles, two of the world largest bicycle manufacturers, are headquartered here. Ludhiana commercial energy, driven by the entrepreneurial Punjabi business community, makes it one of the most economically dynamic cities in north Bharat.
Ludhiana was founded in the 15th century by the Lodhi rulers (from whom the city takes its name) and developed as a trading centre. Its industrial transformation began in the post-independence period when the entrepreneurial Punjabi business community, energised by the Partition and the imperative to rebuild, channelled their enterprise into manufacturing, creating the hosiery and bicycle industries that made the city famous.
Ludhiana Junction is a major railway station on the Delhi-Amritsar main line. NH-44 road connectivity. Ludhiana Airport has domestic flights. Approximately 100 km from Chandigarh and 130 km from Amritsar.
Ludhiana industrial economy operates year-round. Lohri (January) is the most important festival, celebrated with bonfires across the city. Baisakhi (April) marks the Punjabi harvest new year. Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Gurupurabs, particularly Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti, see the city illuminated with lights. The winter months (October-February) see the hosiery industry at its peak production.
