📍 About this Locality

Amritsar is the spiritual capital of the Sikh faith and one of the most sacred cities in Bharat, home to the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), the holiest gurdwara in the world where the Guru Granth Sahib (the eternal Sikh scripture) is enshrined and where the langar (free community kitchen) feeds up to 100,000 people every day without discrimination of faith, caste or station. The Golden Temple complex, with its gold-plated sanctum surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar) from which the city takes its name, is one of the most breathtaking architectural and spiritual experiences available anywhere on earth. Amritsar is also the site of the Jallianwala Bagh, where the tragic massacre of 1919 is commemorated, and the Wagah Border, where the flag lowering ceremony is one of Bharat most visited patriotic spectacles.

📜 Historical Roots

Amritsar was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, who excavated the Amrit Sarovar. The city was developed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji who built the Harmandir Sahib and compiled the Guru Granth Sahib. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre (13 April 1919), in which General Dyer ordered troops to fire on an unarmed crowd celebrating Baisakhi, killing hundreds, was one of the defining atrocities of pre-independence period rule that galvanised the independence movement.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Golden Temple is visited round the year with no seasonal variation in spiritual significance. The Baisakhi festival (April) is the most important, celebrated with particular meaning in Amritsar as both the Punjabi harvest new year and the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. Diwali (Bandi Chhor Divas) and Gurupurabs see the Golden Temple illuminated magnificently. Lohri (January) is celebrated with community bonfires.
