Tarn Taran is the headquarters of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, a town of great spiritual significance for the Sikh community as the site of the Tarn Taran Sahib gurdwara, one of the most important historic gurdwaras in Punjab. The gurdwara was established by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, and the sacred sarovar (pool) here is the second largest in the Punjab gurdwara tradition after the Golden Temple at Amritsar. The district borders Pakistan and has a predominantly Sikh rural character with productive agricultural land.
Tarn Taran Sahib was established in 1588 by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who built the gurdwara and excavated the large sarovar as a place of healing and spiritual rejuvenation. The gurdwara name means One who helps cross the ocean of existence, reflecting the deep Sikh theological concept of liberation from the cycle of rebirth through devotion.
Tarn Taran railway station on the Amritsar-Attari branch line. State Highway road connectivity. Approximately 25 km from Amritsar.
The Tarn Taran Sahib gurdwara sees continuous pilgrimage throughout the year. Baisakhi (April) is the most significant celebration at the gurdwara. Gurupurabs, particularly the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji (June), are observed with deep devotion. Lohri (January) marks the harvest festival. The wheat harvest season (March-April) is the most economically significant agricultural period.
