Jalandhar is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Punjab, with references in the Mahabharata and connections to the ancient Jalandhara kingdom. The city served as the capital of undivided Punjab before the creation of Chandigarh. Its sports goods industry developed in the post-independence period when the skills of local craftsmen, originally applied to making tools and implements, were channelled into sports equipment manufacturing.
