📍 About this Locality

Nawanshahr, officially Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, is the headquarters of the district renamed in honour of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, the great revolutionary freedom fighter who was born at Banga village in this district. The renaming reflects the enormous pride that Punjab and all of Bharat feel for one of the most celebrated heroes of the independence struggle. Nawanshahr is a small but significant district headquarters serving the agricultural communities of the Doaba region between the Beas and Satluj rivers, known for citrus fruits, wheat and the NRI connections of the Doabi community.

📜 Historical Roots

Shaheed Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 at Banga village in what is now Nawanshahr district. One of the most beloved figures in Bharat freedom struggle, Bhagat Singh revolutionary activism, his famous action at the Central Legislative Assembly and his execution at the age of 23 made him the face of passionate youthful resistance to pre-independence period rule. Bhagat Singh Jayanti (28 September) is observed with particular significance here.
