Rampur Bushahr is a historic town in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, the former capital of the Bushahr princely state and an important commercial centre on the banks of the Satluj river at the confluence of the Baspa river. The town is known for the Lavi Fair, one of the oldest and most important trade fairs in the western Himalayas, held annually in November when traders from across Himachal Pradesh, Kinnaur, Spiti and even from Tibet and Central Asia historically converged to exchange goods. Rampur Bushahr is the gateway to the Kinnaur district and the spectacular Kinnaur Kailash mountain, a sacred peak of deep significance for both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
The Bushahr princely state was one of the oldest and most significant hill kingdoms of the western Himalayas, claiming descent from the solar dynasty. The Lavi Fair has been held in Rampur since at least the 18th century when it served as a critical trade exchange point on the ancient salt and wool route between the Tibetan plateau and the Himalayan foothills.
Rampur Bushahr is on NH-5 (Hindustan-Tibet Road) approximately 140 km from Shimla. HRTC bus services to Shimla and Kinnaur. The road follows the Satluj river through spectacular gorges.
The Lavi Fair (November) is the most significant annual event, drawing traders and visitors from across the Himalayas. The apple harvest season (August-October) is the most economically important period for the surrounding orchards. The monsoon (July-September) makes the Satluj valley lush but road conditions can be challenging. Winter (December-February) brings snowfall to higher areas. The Kinnaur Kailash circumambulation is performed in August-September.
