Bilaspur is the headquarters of Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh, a town with a poignant history as the old Bilaspur town was submerged by the Gobind Sagar reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam, one of independent Bharat's most ambitious and significant hydroelectric and irrigation projects. The new Bilaspur town was built on higher ground to accommodate the displaced community. The Gobind Sagar reservoir, stretching 88 km along the Satluj valley, is one of the largest man-made lakes in Asia and a stunning scenic attraction. AIIMS Bilaspur, one of the new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences established in the 2010s, is bringing significant healthcare infrastructure to the region.

📜 Historical Roots

The Bhakra Dam, built on the Satluj river, was one of Nehru's temples of modern India, a massive hydroelectric and irrigation project that powered Punjab's Green Revolution. The submergence of the historic Bilaspur town under the Gobind Sagar reservoir represents one of the most poignant sacrifices made for national development in independent Bharat, with thousands of families displaced from their ancestral homes and lands.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Gobind Sagar reservoir is most scenic in the post-monsoon season (October-December) when the lake is at its fullest. The Naina Devi temple on the hilltop above the reservoir sees its highest pilgrimage during Navratri (September-October) and the Shravan month. The Bilaspur Mahotsav cultural festival is held in October. Winter months are the most pleasant for visiting.
