📜 Historical Roots

Jammu was the seat of the Dogra dynasty whose rulers, the Maharajas of Jammu and Kashmir, built a kingdom that at its greatest extent included Jammu, the Kashmir valley, Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan. The Dogra cultural tradition, expressed in art, literature, music and the distinctive Dogri language, is one of the rich cultural threads of the Jammu region. Maharaja Gulab Singh, who purchased Kashmir from the British after the First Anglo-Sikh War, established the Dogra dynasty's paramount importance in this region.
