Baramulla is the headquarters of Baramulla district in north Kashmir, an important commercial town on the Jhelum river at the entrance of the Kashmir valley, where the river cuts through the mountains in its famous gorge before entering the plains of Punjab. The town has historically been the gateway to Kashmir from the north and west, and its commercial activity as a trading hub for apple, walnut and other produce of north Kashmir makes it one of the valley's most important market centres. The surrounding landscape of orchards, the Jhelum river and the Pir Panjal mountains creates a setting of great beauty.
Baramulla has ancient significance as the entry point to the Kashmir valley from the northwest, a position that gave it strategic and commercial importance through successive historical periods. The town has been a centre of trade and transit for merchants, pilgrims and travellers entering Kashmir through the mountain passes since antiquity.
Baramulla railway station is the terminus of the Banihal-Baramulla rail line, making it the first complete rail link within the Kashmir valley. NH-1 road connectivity within the valley. JKSRTC bus services. Approximately 55 km from Srinagar.
The apple harvest season (August-October) is the most economically significant period for Baramulla district, when the valley's famous apple crop is harvested and transported. The spring blossom season (March-April) when apple orchards bloom is among Kashmir's most beautiful sights. Summer (May-August) is the active tourist and agricultural season. The Jhelum river is most dramatic during the snowmelt season (April-June).
