📍 About this Locality

Kanpur is the largest city in Uttar Pradesh and one of Bharat great industrial cities, the Manchester of the East for its leather and textile industries. Sitting on the Ganga, Kanpur combines its industrial heritage, the IIT Kanpur (one of the premier IITs of Bharat), the Ganga ghats with their spiritual resonance and the dense commercial activity of one of north Bharat largest cities. The leather export industry of Kanpur centred in the Jajmau tannery cluster makes it a global supplier of leather goods.

📜 Historical Roots

Kanpur emerged as a major industrial centre during the pre-independence period when the Ganga river transport and railway network attracted cotton mills and leather tanneries. IIT Kanpur, established in 1959 with US collaboration, became one of the premier technical institutions in Asia. During the 1857 Uprising the Kanpur events were pivotal.

Kanpur Central is one of northern Bharat busiest railway stations on the Delhi-Howrah main line. Kanpur Airport has domestic flights. NH-19. Approximately 440 km from Delhi.

The Ganga Mahotsav (November) at the Kanpur ghats is a major cultural event. Chhath Puja (October-November) sees the Ganga ghats filled with devotees. Diwali and Holi are the major community festivals.
