📍 About this Locality

Jaunpur is the headquarters of Jaunpur district on the Gomti river in eastern Uttar Pradesh, a city of remarkable architectural heritage from the Sharqi Sultanate (1394-1479 CE) whose rulers built a distinctive style of mosque architecture seen nowhere else in Bharat, with towering entrance pylons replacing minarets. The Atala Mosque, the Jama Masjid and the Lal Darwaza mosque represent this unique Jaunpur Sharqi style that earned the city the name Shiraz of India in its cultural golden age.

📜 Historical Roots

Jaunpur was founded by Firuz Shah Tughlaq in 1360 and became the capital of the independent Sharqi Sultanate, whose rulers presided over a remarkable cultural flowering: the Jaunpur school of music, the distinctive architectural style and the patronage of scholarship made Jaunpur briefly one of the great cultural capitals of North Bharat.

The Gomti is most dramatic during the monsoon (June-September). Diwali and Holi are major festivals. Eid is observed by the significant Muslim community. Heritage monuments are most comfortably visited November-February.
