📍 About this Locality
Roorkee is a significant city in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, historically important as the home of the first engineering college in Asia, established in 1847 as the Thomason Civil Engineering College to train engineers for construction of the Ganga Canal, later becoming IIT Roorkee, one of Bharat premier technical institutions and the oldest technical institution of higher education in Asia. The Upper Ganga Canal system built between 1842-1854 and running 560 km was the most ambitious irrigation project of its era.

The Thomason Civil Engineering College at Roorkee (1847) was established specifically to train engineers for the Upper Ganga Canal. As IIT Roorkee it continues as one of Bharat most prestigious technical institutions, producing engineers who have led Bharat infrastructure development across decades.
