📍 About this Locality

Pithoragarh is the headquarters of Pithoragarh district in the Kumaon Himalayas, the Little Kashmir of Uttarakhand, a beautiful hill town at 1,814 metres set in a valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The district shares a border with Nepal and the Kali river (Mahakali) forms the Nepal boundary. The Pithoragarh town fort, the Mosta Manu temple, the Chandak hills and trekking routes leading to the Himalayan passes make it both a heritage town and an adventure gateway. The Kumaoni cultural heritage of festivals, Aipan art and folk music flourishes in this district.

📜 Historical Roots

Pithoragarh was part of the Kumaon kingdom before Gurkha rule (1790-1815) and pre-independence administration. The Kumaoni culture with its distinctive festivals (Uttarayani, Ghee Sankranti), music (Kumaoni folk songs) and Aipan ritual art flourishes in the hill villages of this district.

Pithoragarh is approximately 220 km from Haldwani. NH-125. Naini Saini Airport (8 km) has limited domestic flights. Tanakpur is the nearest major railhead (150 km).

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Uttarayani festival (Makar Sankranti, January) is the Kumaon most important fair. The summer season (April-June) is pleasant for the valley town. The apple harvest (August-October) is important. The Himalayan views are clearest in the post-monsoon October-November period.
