📍 About this Locality

Almora is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich hill towns of the Kumaon Himalayas, the former capital of the Kumaon kingdom, set on a horseshoe ridge at 1,638 metres with commanding views of the central Himalayan peaks. The town is celebrated for its extraordinary Kumaoni cultural heritage: the brass craft, the Aipan ritual art (GI tagged) painted by women during festivals, Kumaoni folk music and the Chitai Golu Devta temple (the god of justice) where thousands of petition letters flutter from the temple as devotees seek the deity judgment. Swami Vivekananda meditated near Almora and the Kasar Devi ridge draws seekers from across the world.

📜 Historical Roots

Almora was established as the capital of the Kumaon kingdom by the Chand dynasty rulers. Swami Vivekananda meditated at the Kasar Devi temple ridge above Almora in 1898, an area now internationally known for its magnetic anomaly attracting seekers. The town historic bazaar streetscape is one of the finest surviving Himalayan hill town environments.

Almora is approximately 90 km from Kathgodam railway station (the plains railhead for Kumaon). NH-87. Haldwani (90 km) is the nearest large city with rail connectivity.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Uttarayani fair (January) at Bageshwar nearby is the region most important gathering. The post-monsoon October-November period offers the most spectacular Himalayan views. Winter brings snowfall. The Kumaoni festival calendar of Ghee Sankranti (August), Holi and Diwali are observed in their distinctive local forms.
