📍 About this Locality

Basti is the headquarters of Basti district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, an agricultural and market town in the Rapti river basin. The district is of exceptional Buddhist significance: the ancient city of Shravasti, where the Buddha spent 25 rains retreats and performed miracles attracting thousands of followers, is in Basti district, making it one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. The Jetavana monastery, built by Anathapindika for the Buddha, stood here.

📜 Historical Roots

Shravasti, ancient capital of Kosala kingdom, was one of the six great cities of ancient Bharat at the time of the Buddha. The Buddha spent 25 out of his 45 post-enlightenment years in rains retreats at Jetavana monastery here, making Shravasti central to the Buddhist Pali canon.

Basti railway station on Gorakhpur-Lucknow main line. NH-28. Shravasti is 18 km from Basti. Approximately 200 km from Lucknow.

🌿 Seasonal Context

Buddhist pilgrims visit Shravasti particularly around Buddha Purnima (April-May) drawing devotees from East Asia, Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka. Diwali and Holi are the major community festivals. The paddy harvest (October-November) defines the agricultural calendar.
