📍 About this Locality

Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, one of the holiest cities in the Vaishnava world and one of the seven moksha-granting Sapta Puri cities. The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex marks the spot of the divine birth. The Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna, the Dwarkadhish temple, the 25 ghats of the Yamuna bank and the dense atmosphere of a city alive with Krishna devotion for over three millennia make Mathura one of the most spiritually charged experiences in Bharat. The city is also a major industrial centre with one of India largest oil refineries.

📜 Historical Roots

Mathura has been a continuously inhabited sacred city for over 2,500 years. The Mathura school of sculpture (1st-4th centuries CE) created the distinctive standing Buddha images that revolutionised Indian religious art. The city was sacked multiple times by invaders yet the Krishna devotion tradition remained unbroken through 3,000 years of continuous pilgrimage.

Mathura Junction on Delhi-Agra-Mumbai main line. NH-19 and NH-44 converge. Approximately 150 km from Delhi and 60 km from Agra.

🌿 Seasonal Context

Janmashtami (August) is the supreme celebration. Holi of Braj region (March) is the world most famous Holi, lasting weeks with Lathmar Holi traditions. Radhashtami (August-September) and Diwali are major events.
