Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and one of the most magnificent and culturally vibrant cities in Bharat, known as the Pink City for the distinctive terracotta-pink colour of its old walled city buildings, painted in honour of the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1876 and maintained by law ever since. The city was founded in 1727 by the great astronomer-king Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as one of the first planned cities of the subcontinent, laid out on a precise grid following Vastu Shastra principles. The Hawa Mahal, the City Palace, the Jantar Mantar (UNESCO World Heritage astronomical observatory), the Amber Fort (UNESCO World Heritage), the Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts make Jaipur one of the finest heritage cities in Asia.

📜 Historical Roots

Jaipur was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727, a ruler who was one of the greatest intellectuals among the Rajput kings, an accomplished astronomer who built five Jantar Mantars (astronomical observatories) across Bharat and who corresponded with the European scientific community. The city grid plan, with its six sectors and wider central boulevard, was an extraordinarily sophisticated piece of urban planning for the 18th century.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Jaipur Literature Festival (January) is the world largest free literary event drawing authors, thinkers and readers from across the globe. The Teej festival (July-August) is a spectacular Jaipur celebration with processions, swings and the goddess Teej being taken through the old city in a palanquin. Gangaur (March-April) is the most important women festival. Diwali illuminates the Pink City magnificently. The post-monsoon October-February season is ideal for visiting.
