📍 About this Locality

Ajmer is one of the most significant pilgrimage cities in Bharat, the site of the Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the most revered Sufi shrine in South Asia and one of the most visited sacred sites in the world. The Dargah draws millions of pilgrims of all faiths annually, with its Urs festival being one of the most spectacular religious gatherings in Bharat. The city also contains the Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, one of the oldest mosques in Bharat built on the site of a Sanskrit college, and the Ana Sagar Lake with its beautiful marble pavilions built by Mughal emperor Jahangir. Ajmer is at the geographical heart of Rajasthan and is the gateway to Pushkar, one of Bharat most sacred Hindu pilgrimage centres.

📜 Historical Roots

Ajmer was founded by the Chahamana (Chauhan) Rajput king Ajayaraja II in the 12th century and became one of the most important cities of medieval Rajputana. The arrival of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer in 1192 CE and the establishment of the Chishti Sufi order here transformed the city into the most important centre of Islamic mysticism in South Asia. Emperor Akbar visited the Dargah on foot from Agra as an act of devotion.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (observed in Rajab, the seventh Islamic month) is the most spectacular religious gathering in Rajasthan, drawing millions of pilgrims of all faiths. The Pushkar Camel Fair (November) is one of the most famous cultural events in Bharat. Gangaur (March-April) and Teej are major Rajasthani celebrations. The post-monsoon October-February season is most pleasant.
