📍 About this Locality

Kishangarh is a historic town in Ajmer district of Rajasthan, world-famous in the art world as the origin of the Kishangarh school of Rajput miniature painting, characterised by its distinctive elongated stylised figures, particularly the iconic image of Bani Thani (the Mona Lisa of Rajasthan), the poetess-courtesan who was the beloved of the Kishangarh ruler and whose portrait became the most famous image in Rajput miniature painting. Kishangarh is also today known as the marble and granite trading hub of Rajasthan, with the surrounding region producing significant quantities of building stone.

📜 Historical Roots

The Kishangarh school of painting reached its apex under Maharaja Savant Singh (1748-1764 CE), himself a poet and devotee of Krishna who wrote under the name Nagari Das. The school distinctive style, with its elongated facial features, arched eyebrows and the lyrical treatment of the Krishna-Radha theme, represents one of the most original and beautiful expressions of the Rajput painting tradition.

Kishangarh railway station on the Delhi-Ahmedabad main line. NH-58 road connectivity. Approximately 30 km from Ajmer and 90 km from Jaipur. Kishangarh Airport (Ajmer) has domestic connectivity.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The marble and granite trade is most active during the construction season (October-May). Gangaur (March-April) and Teej (July-August) are major Rajasthani women festivals. Diwali and Holi are major community celebrations. The Kishangarh heritage sites and the Gundalao Lake are most scenic post-monsoon. The Pushkar Camel Fair nearby (November) activates the region.
