Bharatpur is the headquarters of Bharatpur district in eastern Rajasthan, a city associated with two extraordinary heritage assets: the Keoladeo National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, one of the world most important bird sanctuaries and a critical wintering ground for migratory waterfowl including the rare Siberian crane; and the Bharatpur Fort (Lohagarh Fort), the Iron Fort that the British Army failed to capture despite multiple sieges, an achievement celebrated as one of the most remarkable defences in Rajput military history.

📜 Historical Roots

The Lohagarh Fort of Bharatpur was built by the Jat ruler Suraj Mal in 1733 and successfully defended against British attacks in 1805, when General Lake failed to breach its walls despite four attempts. This resistance to the British army, unmatched in Rajputana, made the Jat rulers of Bharatpur legendary. The Keoladeo bird sanctuary was originally a royal hunting ground transformed by the Bharatpur rulers into one of the finest bird habitats in Asia.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Keoladeo National Park is most spectacular during the winter months (October-February) when hundreds of species of migratory birds from Central Asia, Siberia and across Asia winter here. Braj Holi (the Holi celebration of the Braj region around Mathura and Vrindavan) is celebrated with extraordinary colour and enthusiasm in the Bharatpur region. Diwali and Dussehra are major festivals.
