Baran is the headquarters of Baran district in southeastern Rajasthan, a district that sits at the ecological transition between the Vindhya plateau and the Rajasthan plains, with significant forest cover and a substantial tribal population including the Saharia people, considered one of the most primitive tribal groups in Rajasthan. The district is known for the Shahabad and Kelwara limestone belt, archaeological sites and the Ramgarh crater, believed to be one of the largest meteorite impact craters in the world at approximately 3 km in diameter.
