Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan and one of the most spectacular cities in Bharat, known as the Blue City for the distinctive indigo-blue painted houses of the old city that cluster beneath the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort, perched on a 125-metre high rock and considered one of the finest forts in the world. The city was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan and remains the seat of Marwar, the Rajput kingdom whose rulers have left an extraordinary architectural and cultural legacy. The Umaid Bhawan Palace, still partially inhabited by the Jodhpur royal family and one of the largest private residences in the world, is another landmark of Marwar grandeur.
Jodhpur was the capital of Marwar, one of the most powerful Rajput kingdoms, whose Rathore rulers ruled from the impregnable Mehrangarh Fort for over 500 years. The fort contains palaces of extraordinary beauty whose carved sandstone screens, painted apartments and panoramic views make it one of the finest examples of Rajput palatial architecture. The Bishnoi community near Jodhpur, who sacrificed their lives to protect trees in the Khejarli massacre of 1730, are the ancestors of the modern environmental movement.
Jodhpur Junction is a major railway station. Jodhpur Airport has domestic and some international flights. NH-62 and NH-58 road connectivity. Approximately 330 km from Jaipur.
The Marwar Festival (October) celebrates the heroes of Rajputana with folk music, camel tattoo shows and cultural events. The Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) at Mehrangarh Fort (October) is one of the world finest folk music events. The winter months (October-February) are most pleasant. The Bishnoi villages around Jodhpur are active year-round with their distinctive conservation traditions.
