📍 About this Locality

Barmer is the headquarters of Barmer district in the extreme western Rajasthan Thar desert, a district that borders Pakistan and has been transformed by the discovery of significant oil and gas reserves at Mangala field (one of the largest onshore oil discoveries in Bharat), which began production under Cairn India in 2009. The district is also known for the Barmer handicraft tradition, particularly the distinctive Barmer embroidery (applique work), the Barmer prints (resist-dyed fabrics) and the Langa and Manganiyar folk musician communities whose extraordinary musical traditions have gained international recognition.

The Langa and Manganiyar communities of the Barmer region are hereditary musician castes whose traditions of performing for Rajput and Muslim patrons stretch back centuries. Their extraordinary musical repertoire, mixing Rajasthani folk, Sufi devotional and wedding music in performances of riveting intensity, has brought the desert music of Barmer to concert halls across the world.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Barmer Festival (February-March) celebrates the desert culture with folk performances by Langa and Manganiyar musicians, camel competitions and craft displays. The winter months (November-February) are the only comfortable season given Barmer extreme heat. Gangaur (March-April) and Diwali are major Rajasthani festivals. The desert landscape is most atmospheric in the clear winter light.
