Jaisalmer is the golden city of the Thar desert, a city of extraordinary beauty rising from the flat desert plain, its golden sandstone fort and havelis shimmering in the desert light. The Jaisalmer Fort, a living fort where a significant population still lives within its walls, is one of the largest fully preserved fortified cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The intricate stone latticework of the Patwon Ki Haveli and other merchant mansions, the Sam sand dunes where visitors experience the Thar sunset, the Desert National Park with the great Indian bustard, and the Gadisar Lake make Jaisalmer one of the most distinctive and beloved destinations in all of Bharat.
Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 CE by Rawal Jaisal of the Bhati Rajput clan on the ancient Silk Route trade corridor. The city prospered for centuries as a trading post on the caravan routes connecting Central Asia to the Indian Ocean ports. The decline of the camel caravan trade and the partition of Bharat in 1947 (which cut off the trade routes) nearly destroyed the city economy before tourism transformed it from the 1980s onward.
Jaisalmer railway station on the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer line. Jaisalmer Airport has domestic flights. NH-11 road connectivity. Approximately 575 km from Jaipur.
The Desert Festival (February) is the most spectacular event in the Jaisalmer calendar, with camel races, folk performances, turban tying competitions and the magnificent backdrop of the Sam dunes. The winter months (November-February) are ideal for visiting with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The Gangaur festival (March-April) is celebrated with Rajasthani traditions. The monsoon (July-August) brings the rare phenomenon of rain to the desert.
