Rajkot is one of Gujarat's most important and dynamic cities, the fourth largest city in the state and the commercial capital of the Saurashtra region. The city is known across Bharat for its engineering industry, particularly the production of precision engineering components, diesel engines, auto parts and machine tools that have made Rajkot one of Bharat's most important manufacturing clusters. The city's entrepreneurial spirit and engineering culture have produced a large number of small and medium enterprises that supply to industries across the country and export globally. Rajkot is also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi's formative years, with connections to both Porbandar (his birthplace) and Rajkot where his father served as the diwan of the princely state.
Rajkot was the capital of the Rajkot princely state and the seat of the Political Agency for Kathiawar, making it an important administrative centre of the Saurashtra region. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's father Karamchand Gandhi served as the diwan (prime minister) of Rajkot state, and the young Gandhi spent formative years here before going to London to study law. The Alfred High School where Gandhi studied still stands in the city.
Rajkot Junction is a major railway station on the Western Railway. Rajkot Airport has domestic connectivity. NH-27 and NH-947 road connectivity. Central Saurashtra location with good connectivity across Gujarat.
Navratri (September-October) is Rajkot's most spectacular festival, celebrated with nine nights of garba dancing in a tradition that is among the finest expressions of Gujarati culture. The garba of Saurashtra has its own distinctive character. Janmashtami (August) is celebrated with great devotion given the region's deep Krishna connection. Uttarayan (Makar Sankranti, January) is the kite festival celebrated with extraordinary enthusiasm across Gujarat. Diwali and the Gujarati New Year are the most commercially significant festivals.
