Porbandar is one of the most sacred cities in Bharat's national consciousness, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, whose life and philosophy of truth and non-violence transformed not just Bharat but the world. The Kirti Mandir, built on the site of Gandhi's ancestral home, is one of Bharat's most visited national memorials. Porbandar is also the birthplace of Sudama, the childhood friend of Lord Krishna, whose story of friendship and devotion is one of the most beloved in the Bhagavata Purana, giving the city a deep spiritual identity predating its modern associations. The city is also known as the Biscuit City of Bharat for its large biscuit and confectionery manufacturing industry, and has a significant fishing economy on the Saurashtra coast.
Porbandar was the capital of the Porbandar princely state, a small but significant coastal state whose position on the Arabian Sea trade routes gave it commercial importance. The birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi here on 2 October 1869 gave this modest coastal town a place of permanent significance in world history. Gandhi's early memories of Porbandar, described in his autobiography, connect the city to the foundations of his moral philosophy.
Porbandar railway station is on the Rajkot-Porbandar line. Porbandar Airport has domestic connectivity. NH-947 road connectivity. Approximately 120 km from Rajkot.
Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) is the most significant civic event in Porbandar, observed with national reverence. Janmashtami (August) celebrates the Krishna connection with Sudama's birthplace. The coastal fishing season is most active October-May. Navratri (September-October) is celebrated with garba. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed. The monsoon (June-September) brings the Arabian Sea to dramatic height.
