Jamnagar is one of Saurashtra's most historically and economically significant cities, known as the Brass City of Bharat for its extraordinary concentration of brass parts manufacturing industry that supplies plumbing fittings, valves and components to markets across Bharat and internationally. The city is also home to the world's largest oil refinery complex, operated by Reliance Industries at Jamnagar, making it a city of immense national economic significance. The historic walled city of Jamnagar, with its ornate havelis, the Lakhota Lake palace museum and the Ranjit Vilas Palace, reflects the cultural heritage of the Jadeja Rajput rulers who founded and developed this city. The Marine National Park and Sanctuary in the Gulf of Kutch near Jamnagar is Bharat's first marine national park.
Jamnagar was founded in 1540 by Jam Raval of the Jadeja clan of Rajputs who established the city as the capital of the Nawanagar princely state. The city is forever associated with Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji (Ranji), the great cricketer who played for England and later became the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, and in whose honour the Ranji Trophy, Bharat's premier domestic cricket tournament, is named.
Jamnagar railway station is on the Western Railway Rajkot-Okha line. Jamnagar Airport has domestic connectivity. NH-27 road connectivity. Approximately 90 km from Rajkot.
Navratri (September-October) is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Jamnagar, with Jadeja Rajput community traditions adding distinctive character to the garba celebrations. Janmashtami (August) is observed with devotion given the Saurashtra region's deep Krishna connection. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed. The Marine National Park is most accessible for snorkelling and marine wildlife viewing during October-May.
