Junagadh is one of Gujarat's most historically layered and culturally rich cities, whose name literally means Old Fort, a reference to the Uparkot fort that has stood on its hill for over two millennia. The city sits at the base of the Girnar hills, the most sacred mountain range in Gujarat, whose five peaks are covered with Jain and Hindu temples that draw pilgrims year-round. The Girnar Parikrama, a circular trek around the base of the Girnar hills, is one of the most significant pilgrimage journeys in Gujarat. Junagadh is also the gateway to the Gir Forest National Park, the last wild habitat of the Asiatic lion, making it a city that combines ancient civilisational heritage with extraordinary wildlife significance.
Junagadh's history stretches over more than two thousand years. The Ashoka rock edicts at Junagadh are among the most important in Bharat, demonstrating that this city was already a significant administrative centre in the Mauryan Empire in the 3rd century BCE. The Uparkot fort, the Kshatrapa rulers, the Chudasama Rajputs and the Babi Nawabs of Junagadh each added layers to the city's extraordinary historical depth.
Junagadh railway station is on the Western Railway Rajkot-Veraval line. NH-27 road connectivity. Approximately 100 km from Rajkot. Gir Forest is approximately 60 km from Junagadh.
The Girnar Parikrama (circumambulation of the Girnar hills), held in the month of Kartik (October-November), is one of Gujarat's most important pilgrimage events drawing lakhs of devotees. Navratri (September-October) and Janmashtami (August) are major festivals. The Girnar hills are most pleasant for trekking in the post-monsoon October-February season. The Asiatic lions in Gir Forest are best sighted in the dry season October-June.
