Gandhinagar is the planned capital of Gujarat, one of independent Bharat's most systematically designed state capitals, built from the 1960s onwards on the western bank of the Sabarmati river to serve as the administrative heart of one of Bharat's most prosperous and dynamic states. Named after Mahatma Gandhi, the capital is known for its grid-like sector planning, extensive green cover and the Akshardham temple, one of the most magnificent Hindu temple complexes in the world, built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. The GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City), one of Bharat's first smart cities and international financial services centres, is located in Gandhinagar, representing Gujarat's vision of financial and technological leadership.

📜 Historical Roots

Gandhinagar was designed as the new capital of Gujarat following the state's formation in 1960 from the bifurcation of bilingual Bombay State. The planned capital's sector-based design, similar to Chandigarh's approach, reflects the mid-20th century ambition of building purposeful, rational state capitals for newly formed states. The Akshardham temple, inaugurated in 1992, has become the most visited destination in Gandhinagar.

The Akshardham temple is visited by millions of pilgrims year-round with peak visits during Navratri (September-October), Diwali and Ram Navami. The Vibrant Gujarat Summit, held every two years in Gandhinagar, is one of Bharat's most significant business events. Navratri in Gandhinagar features particularly grand garba events. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed. The Sabarmati riverfront is most pleasant in the post-monsoon season.
