Himmatnagar is the headquarters of Sabarkantha district in north Gujarat, a commercial and administrative centre for the fertile agricultural zone at the foothills of the Aravalli range. The city serves as a market hub for the cotton, castor and agricultural produce of the surrounding districts. Himmatnagar is also known as a gateway to the Idar Hills, the Polo Forest (one of Gujarat's most significant archaeological forest sites with medieval temples) and the tribal areas of the Aravalli foothills.

Himmatnagar was part of the Idar princely state territory, one of the Rajput kingdoms of north Gujarat whose rulers maintained cultural and political traditions across centuries. The Polo Forest is most scenic and accessible in the post-monsoon October-November period when the forest is lush and the stream is flowing. Navratri (September-October) is the major community festival. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is observed enthusiastically. The tribal communities of the Aravalli foothills have their own seasonal festival calendar tied to agricultural cycles.
