📍 About this Locality

Patan is one of the most historically significant cities in Gujarat, the ancient capital of the Solanki dynasty (also known as the Chaulukyas) which ruled Gujarat from the 10th to 13th centuries CE and presided over a golden age of art, architecture and scholarship. The Rani ki Vav, the Queen's Stepwell built in the 11th century CE by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband King Bhimdev I, is one of the finest stepwells in Bharat and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as an outstanding example of subterranean architecture and water management. Patan is also famous for the Patola silk weaving tradition, double ikat sarees of extraordinary complexity woven by the Salvi community, which are among the most technically demanding and valuable textiles in the world.

📜 Historical Roots

Patan (ancient Anhilwad Patan) was one of the greatest cities of medieval Bharat, capital of the Solanki rulers at the height of their power under Kumarpal and Siddhraj Jaisingh. The city hosted the scholar Hemachandra, one of the greatest Sanskrit grammarians and Jain philosophers, whose works shaped Gujarati literary and religious culture. The Solanki period produced extraordinary architecture including the Modhera Sun Temple and the Rani ki Vav.

Patan railway station is on the Western Railway Mehsana-Palanpur line. NH-68 road connectivity. Approximately 130 km from Ahmedabad and 25 km from Mehsana.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Rani ki Vav is most beautifully lit in the early morning and evening light of the post-monsoon season (October-February). The stepwell fills partially during the monsoon creating a dramatic reflection. Navratri (September-October) is the major festival. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed. The Patola silk weavers work year-round on commissions for their extraordinarily time-intensive textiles.
