Kheda is the district headquarters of Kheda district in central Gujarat, a town historically significant for the Kheda Satyagraha of 1918, one of Gandhi's first major non-violent campaigns in Bharat, when the peasant farmers of Kheda district who faced crop failure refused to pay land revenue under Gandhi's leadership. This campaign, predating the Non-Cooperation Movement, was a formative moment in Bharat's freedom struggle and in Gandhi's development of satyagraha as a political tool. The fertile agricultural land of Kheda district produces tobacco, rice, vegetables and wheat.
The Kheda Satyagraha of 1918, in which Gandhi mobilised the peasant farmers of Kheda district to refuse payment of land revenue during a year of crop failure, was one of the earliest and most successful applications of non-violent resistance in Bharat. The campaign's success established Gandhi's credibility as a mass leader and demonstrated that satyagraha could be an effective political tool in rural Bharat.
Kheda is approximately 40 km from Ahmedabad and well connected by road on NH-48. Nearest railway station is Nadiad. State Highway connectivity across the district.
The agricultural cycle of Kheda district, producing tobacco (kharif, June-October) and wheat (rabi, November-March), defines the seasonal economic calendar. Navratri (September-October) is the major festival. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed across the district. Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) and the anniversary of the Kheda Satyagraha are civic events of some significance.
