Dahod is the headquarters of Dahod district in eastern Gujarat, one of Bharat's most important Adivasi (tribal) districts where the Bhil community forms a significant majority of the population. The city serves as the administrative, commercial and health services hub for a large tribal population whose cultural traditions, the Garba dance of the Bhil community (distinct from the mainstream Gujarati garba), their forest-based livelihoods and their relationship with the forested hills of the Vindhya-Satpura interface are among the most significant tribal cultural traditions in western Bharat. Dahod is also known for its connection to Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who was born here.
Dahod holds historical significance as the birthplace of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (1618 CE). Beyond this Mughal connection, Dahod and the surrounding Panchmahals region have a much deeper history as the homeland of the Bhil tribal people, one of Bharat's most numerous Adivasi communities, whose ancestors are mentioned in the Mahabharata and whose oral traditions connect them to the ancient forest peoples of central Bharat.
Dahod railway station is on the Western Railway Godhra-Ratlam line. NH-56 road connectivity. Approximately 190 km from Ahmedabad.
Holi is the most spectacular festival in the Bhil tribal areas of Dahod district, celebrated with distinctive tribal music, dance and community bonding over several days. Navratri sees the Bhil community's distinctive garba traditions alongside mainstream Gujarati celebrations. The agricultural cycle follows the kharif maize and paddy season (June-October). The forested hills are most scenic during and after the monsoon (June-October).
