Bharuch, one of the oldest port cities in Bharat, sits at the mouth of the Narmada river where it meets the Gulf of Khambhat. Known in antiquity as Bharukaccha or Broach, the city was one of the most important trading ports of the ancient world, mentioned in Greek, Roman, Arab and Chinese sources as a major entrepot for trade between Bharat and the Mediterranean, West Asia and East Asia. Today Bharuch is a significant industrial city, particularly known for the GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) chemical and pharmaceutical industrial estates that make it one of Bharat's largest chemical manufacturing zones. The Golden Bridge over the Narmada at Bharuch is one of Gujarat's most historic bridge structures.

The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a Greek-Roman maritime guide of the 1st century CE, describes Bharukaccha as the most important port on India's west coast. Arab geographers and Chinese pilgrims also documented the city's importance. This 2000-year-old trading heritage makes Bharuch one of the most historically documented port cities in Bharat.
