Bardoli is one of the most historically significant towns in Gujarat's freedom struggle, the site of the famous Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928, which gave Vallabhbhai Patel the title of Sardar (Leader) conferred by the women of Bardoli in recognition of his leadership of the successful peasant resistance movement. The Bardoli Satyagraha, in which the peasants of Bardoli taluka refused to pay an unjust enhancement in land revenue under Patel's leadership, was one of the most successful satyagrahas before the Non-Cooperation Movement and demonstrated the power of organised non-violent resistance. Today Bardoli is known for its sugar cooperative and the Veer Smruti memorial museum commemorating the Satyagraha.
The Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928 was organised by Vallabhbhai Patel against a 22 percent enhancement in land revenue by the Bombay Presidency government. The movement's complete success, achieved through disciplined non-violent non-cooperation over six months, made Bardoli famous across Bharat and earned Patel the title Sardar from the grateful women of the taluka. This campaign demonstrated Patel's extraordinary organising abilities that would later serve the integration of princely states.
Bardoli railway station is on the Western Railway Surat-Udhna-Bardoli branch line. NH-53 road connectivity. Approximately 30 km from Surat.
The Bardoli Satyagraha anniversary (June-August) is marked with civic events commemorating the freedom struggle. The sugar cane crushing season (November-April) is the most economically significant period for the surrounding agricultural area. Navratri (September-October) is the major festival. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed. The Veer Smruti Museum draws visitors throughout the year.
