Surat is one of Bharat's most economically dynamic cities, the diamond cutting and polishing capital of the world (processing over 90 percent of the world's rough diamonds), the textile capital of India producing synthetic fabrics and sarees that clothe the country, and one of the fastest growing cities in Asia. The city on the Tapi river is a monument to the entrepreneurial genius of the Gujarati business community, whose Patidar, Jain and Soni communities have built global industries in diamonds, textiles and chemicals from this port city. Surat's diamond industry, concentrated in the areas around Varachha, Katargam and Surat city, directly employs over 600,000 artisans who transform rough diamonds from Africa, Russia and Australia into the polished gems sold in jewellery stores across the world.

📜 Historical Roots

Surat was one of the most important ports in medieval and early modern Bharat, the primary port of the Mughal Empire and the first point of European commercial contact on the west coast. The English East India Company established its first factory in Bharat at Surat in 1608. The city's mercantile traditions, which survived the decline of the port's importance in the 19th century, were channelled into new industries. The diamond industry, developed by the Patidar community from the 1960s onward, transformed Surat into a global economic phenomenon.

Navratri (September-October) in Surat sees some of the most spectacular garba events in Gujarat, reflecting the city's Patidar community's passion for this festival. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is celebrated with extraordinary enthusiasm in Surat. Diwali and Gujarati New Year are the most commercially significant festivals for the diamond and textile industries. The Surat food festival celebrating the city's exceptional street food tradition (undhiyu, surati locho, ghughra) is a winter event.
