Valsad is the headquarters of Valsad district in southernmost Gujarat, a city on the Auranga river known for its Alphonso mango orchards (the best Hapus mangoes in Gujarat come from the Valsad-Navsari belt), its Parsi Zoroastrian community heritage, and its position as a commercial hub for south Gujarat's coastal and agricultural economy. The city has a pleasant character with a mixed community of Gujarati Hindus, Parsis, Muslims and the communities of the coastal south Gujarat region. The surrounding district produces Chikoo (sapodilla), mangoes, rice and is part of the industrial corridor along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway.
The Parsi Zoroastrian community has deep roots in south Gujarat, having arrived from Persia over a thousand years ago and settled in towns like Valsad, Navsari and Surat where they built some of Bharat's most significant Zoroastrian fire temples and institutions. The community's contributions to Bharat's industrial, legal and cultural life have been disproportionate to their small numbers, and Valsad district is part of their ancestral homeland in Gujarat.
Valsad railway station is a major station on the Western Railway Mumbai-Ahmedabad main line. NH-48 road connectivity. Approximately 150 km from Mumbai and 240 km from Ahmedabad.
The Alphonso mango season (March-June) is the most celebrated period in Valsad, when the Hapus mango's extraordinary fragrance and flavour make it the most eagerly awaited seasonal produce in western Bharat. Navratri (September-October) is the major community festival. The Parsi New Year (Navroz, celebrated in August in Gujarat) is observed by the Zoroastrian community. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed.
