Navsari is one of the most historically significant towns for the Parsi Zoroastrian community in Bharat, having served as a major centre of Parsi religious and cultural life since the community's arrival from Persia over a millennium ago. The Vadi Daremeher (fire temple) at Navsari is one of the most sacred in the Zoroastrian tradition. Navsari is also the birthplace of Dadabhai Naoroji, the Grand Old Man of India, who was among the first Indian representatives in the British Parliament and whose economic critique of pre-independence era drain theory laid the intellectual foundations of the Indian independence movement. The town is known for its mangoes and has a pleasant, cultured character.
Dadabhai Naoroji (1825-1917), born in Navsari, was one of the founding figures of the Indian National Congress and the first Asian to serve as a Member of the British Parliament (1892). His Drain Theory, articulated in Poverty and Un-British Rule in India, provided the intellectual framework for understanding the economic damage of pre-independence periodism and became a cornerstone of the nationalist economic argument for independence.
Navsari railway station is on the Western Railway Mumbai-Ahmedabad main line. NH-48 road connectivity. Approximately 20 km from Valsad and 45 km from Surat.
The mango season (March-June) brings Navsari's orchards to their most productive. The Parsi community's Navroz (New Year) celebration in August is a significant cultural event in the town's calendar. Navratri (September-October) is the major community festival. Uttarayan (January) kite festival is enthusiastically observed. The Dadabhai Naoroji birth anniversary is marked with civic events.
