Parel and Lalbaug represent one of the most dramatic urban transformations in Bharat β from the mill district that housed hundreds of thousands of textile workers in one of the world's largest concentrations of cotton mills, to a gleaming new district of premium residential towers, corporate headquarters, hospitals and shopping malls. The Girangaon (mill village) that defined Mumbai's working-class identity has been remade, though its memory and community bonds persist.
Lalbaug is forever associated with the Lalbaugcha Raja β Mumbai's most celebrated Ganesh idol, whose annual Chaturthi festival draws millions of devotees in queues that stretch for kilometres and whose darshan is sought by people from every walk of life, from the humblest daily wage earner to the most prominent film star. This association with the Raja gives Lalbaug a spiritual and cultural identity that transcends its economic transformation.
Girangaon β the village of mills β was the site of Bharat's great labour movements in the 20th century. The textile mill workers of Parel and Lalbaug, organised through the mill unions, fought for workers' rights and shaped the political consciousness of Maharashtra. The great mill strike of 1982 and its aftermath fundamentally changed Mumbai's urban landscape.

Lalbaug's calendar is consumed by Ganesh Chaturthi (August-September) β the Lalbaugcha Raja is the city's most celebrated Ganesh idol and the ten-day festival brings the entire locality to a standstill of devotion. Preparation begins in March-April. The processions and visarjan attract millions. Gudi Padwa (March-April) marks the new year. The mill-workers' traditions live on in the community's Diwali and Holi celebrations. The monsoon (June-September) is the most atmospheric season in this historic district.
