📜 Historical Roots

Panaji, known in Konkani as Ponnje and historically as Pangim, became the capital of Portuguese Goa in 1843 when it replaced Old Goa (Velha Goa). The city's Portuguese-era churches, administrative buildings, colourful Latin Quarter and the distinctive Goan-Portuguese urban character represent a unique chapter in the layered history of this coastal region. Goa's liberation from Portuguese rule on 19 December 1961 is celebrated as Goa Liberation Day with great civic pride.

Panaji is connected by road and ferry to Goa's railway stations at Karmali and Madgaon. Goa International Airport (Dabolim) is approximately 30 km by road. The Mandovi river ferry is a beloved local transport mode.
