Ponda is one of Goa's most culturally significant towns, known as the temple town of Goa for its extraordinary concentration of Hindu temples that represent the living religious heritage of Goa's Saraswat and Konkani Hindu communities. The temples of Ponda, including the Shri Mangesh temple, Shri Mahalasa temple, Shri Shantadurga temple and several others, were relocated here from coastal Goa during the Portuguese period when Hindus brought their deities inland to protect them. These temples, with their distinctive blend of Hindu and Portuguese architectural elements, are among the most unique religious buildings in Bharat. Ponda is also home to the spice plantation tourism that has made Goa's agricultural heritage accessible to visitors.
The temples of Ponda represent one of the most remarkable acts of cultural preservation in Bharat's history. During the period of Portuguese rule in coastal Goa, Hindu communities relocated their temple deities and communities inland to the Ponda taluka, which remained outside direct Portuguese control. The resulting concentration of important temples in Ponda made it the spiritual centre of Goa's Hindu community, a status it maintains today.
Ponda is on NH-748 approximately 28 km from Panaji and 17 km from Margao. Well connected by road to all parts of Goa. Nearest railway station is Karmali approximately 15 km.
The temple festivals of Ponda follow the Hindu calendar with each temple having its own jatra (annual festival) that draws large numbers of devotees. The Mangesh temple jatra (February-March) and the Shantadurga festival are among the most significant. Navratri (September-October) sees all temples particularly active. The Goa Carnival and Christmas season bring visitors to the broader region. Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Goa's Hindu community.
