The Ulhas river valley around Karjat is one of the most visually spectacular monsoon landscapes in Maharashtra, with waterfalls, green hills and the ancient hill forts of the Sahyadris creating a landscape of great natural drama.

The Sahyadri region around Karjat is dotted with the hill forts of the Maratha Empire — strategic fortifications built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his successors that controlled the passes between the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau. Post-monsoon October-November is the most popular trekking season as the hills are green but skies clearer. Ganesh Chaturthi (August-September) is celebrated with Konkan traditions. The hill forts are best explored in the pleasant October-February season. Bhimashankar pilgrimage peaks during Shravan.
