Karad is an important commercial town in Satara district situated at the confluence of the Krishna and Koyna rivers β a geographically significant location that has made it a natural centre of trade and agriculture for the surrounding region. The town is known for its active commercial character, its educational institutions and as the hometown of Yashwantrao Chavan β independent Bharat's first Defence Minister and one of Maharashtra's most important political leaders.
The surrounding region is agriculturally productive β benefiting from the Krishna river's irrigation β with sugarcane, vegetables and the famous Mahabaleshwar strawberries grown in the vicinity. Karad's position on the main PuneβBengaluru highway and railway line makes it a significant commercial node.
Karad's position at the Krishna-Koyna confluence has made it historically significant as a crossing point and trading centre. The town's association with Yashwantrao Chavan connects it to the making of independent Maharashtra β Chavan was the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra upon its formation in 1960 and went on to serve at the highest national levels.
Karad station on PuneβMiraj line. NH-48 (PuneβBengaluru) passes through. Road connectivity to Satara, Kolhapur and Sangli.
Karad's calendar is anchored by the Krishna-Koyna confluence which is most dramatic and scenic during the monsoon (June-September). Gudi Padwa (March-April) marks the Maharashtrian new year and is celebrated with Karad's Maharashtrian community's characteristic enthusiasm. Ganesh Chaturthi (August-September) is the major community festival. The sugarcane season runs November-April through the local cooperative factories. The Wari pilgrimage season (June-July) connects the community to the Varkari tradition of Pandharpur.
