📜 Historical Roots

Kolhapur was the seat of the Kolhapur princely state whose Chhatrapati carried the senior line of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's descendants. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur (1874-1922) was a towering figure of social reform — a pioneer of reservations for backward classes and a patron of education, wrestling and the arts whose progressive vision shaped Maharashtra.

Kolhapur's Ambabai temple drives the devotional calendar — Navratri (September-October) is the most significant festival when the goddess is worshipped with nine days of elaborate celebration drawing lakhs of pilgrims. Shravan month sees special puja and large numbers of devotees. Gudi Padwa (March-April) and Dasara (October) are major celebrations in this former royal city. The wrestling akhara season peaks in the cooler months of October-February. Kolhapuri chappal demand peaks in the October-December wedding and festival season.
