Sangli is one of Maharashtra's important commercial cities and the headquarters of Sangli district β a city known particularly as the turmeric trading capital of Asia, where the Sangli APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) handles an extraordinary volume of turmeric that sets prices for the entire sub-continent and influences global spice markets. The aroma of turmeric is inseparable from Sangli's commercial identity.
Beyond turmeric, Sangli is known for grapes β the Sangli-Solapur grape belt produces the finest table grapes in Maharashtra and increasingly for wine production. The city also has a significant commercial presence in textiles, banking and agricultural processing. Sangli's position at the confluence of the Krishna river's trading routes has made it a natural commercial hub for southern Maharashtra.
Sangli was the seat of the Sangli Princely State under the Patwardhan family, who were one of the important Maratha sardars. The Ganapati temple of Sangli and the city's cultural traditions reflect the patronage of the Patwardhan rulers who maintained Sangli as a centre of arts and culture.
Sangli station on the PuneβMirajβKolhapur line. NH-48 and NH-166. Located between Kolhapur and Solapur with good road connectivity across Maharashtra.
Sangli's turmeric market is most active in the post-harvest months of February-May when the season's turmeric crop is processed and traded. The grape harvest runs from February-April with the wine harvest in late January-February. Gudi Padwa (March-April) marks the Maharashtrian new year and coincides with peak agricultural activity. Ganesh Chaturthi (August-September) is the major community festival. The Ganapati temple of Sangli is a particularly active site during this celebration. The monsoon fills the Krishna river beautifully.
