📍 About this Locality

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar — renamed from Aurangabad in 2023 to honour Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who sacrificed his life rather than convert under Aurangzeb's captivity — is Maharashtra's fastest growing city and the commercial and cultural capital of the Marathwada region. The city's transformation from Aurangabad to its authentic Maratha name represents a proud act of civilisational reclamation by the people of Maharashtra.

The city is home to some of Bharat's most extraordinary heritage: the Ajanta Caves (Buddhist paintings, UNESCO) and Ellora Caves (Hindu, Buddhist and Jain rock art, UNESCO) are within day-trip distance, making Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar a UNESCO heritage hub. 📜 Historical Roots

The city was founded as Khadki by Malik Ambar — the Ethiopian slave who became one of the most brilliant military strategists in Deccan history, successfully resisting Mughal expansion into the Deccan. The city later became the Mughal administrative centre of the Deccan under Aurangzeb. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was imprisoned and executed here in 1689 — his sacrifice is central to Maharashtra's historical memory and the city's renaming honours his legacy.
