Buldhana is the headquarters of Buldhana district in the western Vidarbha region — a district known for the Lonar Crater Lake, one of the world's few and most ancient meteorite impact craters, whose saline and alkaline waters host unique microbial life and whose geological and ecological significance is of global scientific importance. The Lonar crater is a UNESCO candidate site and one of Maharashtra's most extraordinary natural wonders.

Buldhana town is a functional district headquarters serving a predominantly agricultural district that produces cotton, soyabean and oranges. The district straddles the boundary between Vidarbha and Marathwada in character and geography.

📜 Historical Roots

The Lonar crater was created approximately 50,000 years ago by a meteorite impact — one of only four known hyper-velocity meteorite impact craters in basaltic rock in the world. The site has been known since ancient times, with temples built on its rim by communities who recognised its sacred and unusual character.

Buldhana is connected by State Highway to Aurangabad and Akola. MSRTC bus services. Nearest railway is Malkapur station on the Mumbai-Nagpur line, approximately 45 km.

🌿 Seasonal Context

Buldhana's most extraordinary seasonal event is the Lonar crater lake in the monsoon (June-September) when the surrounding forest turns lush and the crater fills — a landscape of rare geological and natural beauty. The cotton and soyabean kharif sowing season (June-July) defines the agricultural calendar. Ganesh Chaturthi (August-September) is the major community festival. Gudi Padwa (March-April) marks the Maharashtrian new year. The Lonar crater is most accessible and pleasant during the October-February post-monsoon season.
